What is visual hierarchy?

Visual hierarchy is how design guides the eye through content in order of importance. Size, colour, contrast, spacing and positioning are used to signal what should be seen first, second and third. 

Good visual hierarchy makes content effortless to scan. Bad hierarchy turns pages into visual soup, and doesn’t guide the user anywhere.
